Help for Students Requests

Help for Students Requests

The MDI asks students how they think and feel about their lives inside and outside of school, and about their relationships with peers and adults. There are questions on the survey that ask about bullying and victimization experiences. At the end of the survey (or if a student withdraws from the survey), we need to ensure that students are aware that they can speak to a caring adult at home or school if they are having problems.

How do students request help from an adult on the MDI?

Once students complete the MDI, or if they choose to withdraw, they will see a “Help for Students Page”

If a student indicates that they would like help, an email is sent to the classroom teacher and school principal indicating that the student has requested help. We ask that school staff check their email as soon as possible after MDI administration, and follow their school’s protocol for assisting students who request help. Some students may also approach teachers or school staff to discuss problems they are having.

You do not need to let HELP know the outcome of the student’s request, we only follow up with schools if the student’s request email bounces back to ensure that they have been received.

What have we heard from schools?

We have heard from schools that many students who request to talk to a teacher or principal were already known to school staff, and it was another opportunity to check in with those students. We have also heard from staff that they have heard from students that they were not aware were having problems at home or school.

The types of problems students identified were problems with other students, academic concerns, or problems at home.
